It introduces the Intensive Care Medicine unit and provides practical information to make it easier to communicate with the care team. The team cares for adults with serious illnesses affecting vital organs such as the lungs, heart, kidneys, liver or brain. Different forms of organ support may be used depending on which organs are failing. Depending on your loved one’s condition, additional tests may be required, including bronchoscopy or gastrointestinal endoscopy, echocardiography, or imaging that requires medically supervised transfer to the hospital imaging department, such as CT or MRI.We recognise how difficult this time is and are here to support you with compassion.

Our unit takes part in research groups working to improve care for intensive care patients.
The Intensive Care Medicine unit at Hautepierre Hospital has 24 beds divided across three sections. Its main role is to preserve and support the vital functions of adult patients whose health is critically impaired.
When your loved one arrives in the unit, the care team begins treatment immediately. It may take more than an hour before you are able to enter the room. We ask for your patience, as your loved one’s care must come first. Our intensive care unit operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing continuous medical, nursing and allied health monitoring for every patient. This enables the team to respond quickly to any change in a patient’s condition and helps keep everyone safe. The unit is supported by a multidisciplinary team whose members bring complementary expertise and work closely together.

Visits are possible at any time, but patient care always takes priority. If you have a fever, cough or cold, please wear a mask or postpone your visit. Children may visit with the care team’s prior agreement and appropriate preparation; they should not remain in the waiting room unless they have a direct connection with the patient. Mobile phones may be used in silent mode. Some items, including flowers, are not permitted for hygiene reasons, but you may bring small personal belongings. A board is available in the room for you to write down questions, messages and useful information for your loved one. Learn more
Children are welcome to visit, but visits need to be carefully planned. Please speak to the unit team to arrange one.
