Intensive Care Unit – CHU de Toulouse – Hôpital Purpan

Dear Sir/Madam,

Your loved one is currently in our intensive care unit. The purpose of intensive care hospitalization is to care for patients suffering from an acute pathology (disease) that causes the dysfunction of one or more organs (heart, lung, kidney failure, etc.), which may require specific assistance methods (ventilator, dialysis, etc.).

Our department comprises 3 sectors: a multi-purpose Intensive Care Unit (16 beds), a multi-purpose Intensive Care Sector (4 beds) and a Resuscitation Sector (4 beds).
Our multidisciplinary team is made up of a care team: doctors and medical students, nurses, care assistants, physiotherapists, dieticians and a psychologist.

The team also includes two health managers, receptionists, medical secretaries and a social worker.
With this brochure, we will guide you step by step through your loved one’s stay in the intensive care unit.

What is intensive care?

Intensive care is the general medicine for life-threatening conditions. It manages the most critical patients, those whose life and function of major organs (heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, or nervous system) are directly threatened. Regardless of the cause that jeopardizes life, intensive care prioritizes the lives of patients.

A resuscitation service operates 24/7 for continuous monitoring of vital functions and ongoing adjustment of therapies. To ensure this specific care, numerous caregivers, consistently present, provide multiple treatments requiring the use of sophisticated medical equipment.
