The primary role of the Intensive Care Medicine team at Orléans University Hospital is to care for patients with acute medical conditions that may be life-threatening in the short term, including severe infections, respiratory failure, serious heart conditions, coma and acute kidney injury. Almost all modern intensive care techniques are routinely used in the unit. Our other essential roles are to: (1) support the families and friends of patients admitted to the unit through what is often a very difficult period; (2) make a major contribution to medical research, which is vital to continuously improving the quality of care in our specialty; and (3) train the healthcare professionals of tomorrow, including nursing, allied health and medical staff, in critical care practice.
