LifeMapp is designed to guide you through every stage of an intensive care stay and provide the information you need. Welcome to our medical-surgical intensive care and critical care unit. Our multidisciplinary team includes intensive care doctors, nurse managers, nurses, healthcare assistants, administrative staff, psychologists, physiotherapists, dietitians, speech and language therapists, social workers, occupational therapists, hospital support staff, porters and other healthcare professionals. We are here for patients and those close to them, providing the best possible support through what is often a difficult time. The unit has 17 individual intensive care rooms and 12 individual critical care rooms. It treats patients with failure of one or more organs who require continuous monitoring and treatment. Having someone close to you admitted to a critical care unit is often a distressing experience marked by worry and uncertainty. Our team does everything possible to provide excellent care in a safe and compassionate environment. This welcome booklet is designed to help you understand how the unit works. It contains practical information and advice to support you with the steps you may need to take and answer your questions. Thank you for placing your trust in us. We will be by your side at every stage.

Critical care psychologists contribute to the care of patients and support their families and friends at the team’s request, according to the needs of each situation. Their roles include assessing the patient’s level of consciousness and emotional state, and requesting psychiatric input when needed; helping patients understand their condition, treatment, and the different stages and goals of care when their cognitive state allows; helping them process what they are experiencing when they are sufficiently conscious; sharing an understanding of the patient’s situation and wider context with the care team so that professionals can better understand and interact with the patient and those close to them; and supporting vulnerable or distressed family members when serious news is discussed.

We have a virtual reality headset that can help reduce anxiety associated with invasive procedures. Some members of our team are also trained in medical hypnosis, which can enhance the benefits of virtual reality.
When your loved one is unable to communicate verbally or through body language,
it is up to all of us — family, friends and healthcare professionals — to use every available means of communication to remain connected and support them through this experience, despite the emotional pain it may cause.
Our team works towards this with a midwife trained in palliative care and haptonomy, an approach based on supportive touch. She can help you come together around your loved one, be present with them here and now, and accompany what is happening.

LifeMapp Diary is a secure web application used to create ICU diaries for intensive care patients. It helps patients reclaim their story and regain a sense of control after leaving intensive care. The diary is usually written collaboratively by family members, friends and healthcare professionals. It records the patient’s daily life and important events during the hospital stay that may leave physical or memory-related effects, placing them within the wider family and social context. This helps restore a missing part of a story whose consequences the patient may experience without remembering the events themselves.

The Snoezelen trolley is a therapeutic device used as part of the Snoezelen approach, a multisensory method designed to stimulate the senses and promote relaxation, alertness or rehabilitation.
Its multisensory features can help reduce anxiety and promote a sense of wellbeing and relaxation, while improving patient comfort and taking account of the specific constraints of the clinical environment.
Pets may visit, but visits need to be carefully planned. Please speak to the unit team to arrange one.
