Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc

Our commitments to supporting you:

You or someone close to you has just been admitted to intensive care.

LifeMapp was designed to guide you through every stage of an intensive care stay and provide all the information you need. Conceived as a compass, the app helps you find your bearings and move towards returning to everyday life. Developed by the One O One Endowment Fund, LifeMapp is available free of charge to units that request it.

Welcome

Dear Sir or Madam,

Someone close to you has just been admitted to our intensive care unit. We know that this can be an overwhelming experience, bringing worry, questions and sometimes a profound sense of helplessness, whether the person in hospital is an adult or a child.

This document is intended to support you throughout the hospital stay. It provides practical points of reference to help you understand the intensive care environment and how our unit works, together with answers to the questions families ask most often.

Our medical, nursing and allied health teams work day and night to provide highly specialised care that respects every patient’s dignity, safety and individual needs. We also know that you are deeply affected by this experience. We therefore remain available at all times to listen, provide information and support you.

A space has also been set aside for you to express yourself. You can write, draw or leave a message, a thought, an emotion or a memory—whether of joy, fear, hope or vulnerability. These words, whether or not you choose to share them, may help you through this difficult period. For the person in hospital, reading them later may also provide a precious connection and an anchor in the experience you shared.

With our full attention and care,

Additional information

Dear parents,

Your child has been admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. We understand how much this hospital stay may disrupt family life. One of our aims is to help you and your child through this difficult time by providing the most appropriate care. We recognise the important role you play in that care and how valuable your presence is to your child. To help everything run as smoothly as possible, please follow the arrangements below:

One parent may stay overnight with their child. A folding bed is set up at the back of the room at night so that it does not interfere with the care your child requires. We ask the parent staying overnight to leave the room at around 08:00 to shower and have something to eat, and to allow the care team to carry out certain procedures.

Provided that your child’s care allows it, both parents may visit from 11:00 to 23:00. At certain times—for example, when care or examinations are being carried out—we may ask you to wait at intensive care reception or in the parents’ room provided for this purpose. Please help us keep this area calm and orderly.

Close family members may visit between 14:00 and 16:00 and between 19:00 and 20:00. No more than four people may be in the room, and one of the child’s parents must be present.

With the care team’s agreement, brothers and sisters may be allowed a short visit, during which they remain under your supervision. Please ensure that they remain calm and stay in the room of their brother or sister. Visits by other children are not permitted.

Anyone with a fever, cold or potentially contagious illness should not visit.

Before entering the unit, parents and visitors should report to the reception desk on level -1, route 354. If no one is present, call 42730 using the telephone provided.

To ensure that we can focus fully on your child and protect medical confidentiality, we will provide updates about your child only to you, either in the unit or by telephone.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) team.
