Our unit cares for adults with serious illnesses. The aim is to treat the underlying condition and, when necessary, support failing vital functions using treatments such as mechanical ventilation or dialysis. We know that the stay may be difficult both for your loved one and for you. Please be assured that the unit team does everything possible to care for them with dignity and to provide you with the best possible support. This resource has been prepared for you. It explains how the unit works and helps you understand the environment in which your loved one is receiving care. When your loved one is first admitted, the care team begins assessment and treatment immediately. This may take time, for example while carrying out a clinical examination and starting treatment. We will make every effort to update you as soon as possible. This resource introduces the Intensive Care and High-Dependency Unit and provides practical information to make communication with the care team easier.
